Frequently asked questions

These are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the Test Drive Program and about the systems in it. If you have a question and can't find the answer here, let us know and we'll try to either answer it ourselves or point you to someone who can.

Questions about the test drive program

  • What is the Test Drive Program?

The Test Drive Program is a free service of HP. Its main purpose is to provide developers with access to new HP hardware running various HP and third party operating systems and applications. When you register, you get a free shell account you can use to log into the wide variety of systems on our Test Drive network and try out the software and operating systems running on them.

  • What can Test Drive do for me?

Test Drive gives you the opportunity to try out combinations of hardware, operating systems, and software before you buy them. For developers, it also gives you the opportunity to ensure your software runs on hardware, software, and operating system combinations which you may not have available to you locally.

  • How do I sign up for Test Drive?

You can sign up using our Registration form.

  • If I sign up for one Test Drive, do I have to sign up again to use another?

Generally, no. You should be able to update your account settings to take advantage of other test drives we offer. There are specific cases where the procedure is different, but those cases are clearly and individually noted.

  • What sort of hardware is available in Test Drive?

The Test Drive Program uses HP Integrity, HP PA-RISC, HP Blades and HP ProLiant Servers. For more details, take a look under the Hardware section below.

  • What operating systems are running in Test Drive?

Our systems run versions of HP-UX, HP OpenVMS, Red Hat® Linux, SuSE Linux, Mandriva Linux, FreeBSD, and Debian Linux. For more details, take a look under the Operating Systems section below.

  • Why can't I connect to outside systems from a Test Drive system?

We have our firewall set up to only allow incoming connections on specific ports. Attempts to connect to outside hosts will not work because of this.

  • I've set up a server on a Test Drive system. Why can't I connect to it?

We have our firewall set up to only allow incoming connections on specific ports. Attempts to connect to other ports than those we've specified will not work because of this.

  • When I try to connect to a TestDrive server using ftp I can't get a connection. What is wrong?

Please make sure that your ftp client is in passive mode.

  • Who should I contact if I'm having a problem with Test Drive?

You should contact TestDriver by using our feedback form
